A mid week ride

A glorious day with plenty of sunshine and temperatures about 9C, perfect for cycling and 5  club members  turned out.

The route is on the Strava side panel. Please let me know if you can or cant access the map.  Thanks

The ride was to Llantwit Major, a regular place we go to and I've mentioned it here .

I took all the pictures on my phone.

As always there's a cafe stop.  Many cafes have adopted the scheme to fill water bottles for the public in an effort to cut down on the amount of plastic bottles, but then many have been doing this for cyclists for years.

This is the village pond at Fonmon and where Fonmon Castle is.
Its  privately owned, but open to the public on certain days.

This is the railway viaduct in Fontagary Park

and the road through the park.

I took this one because I like the shadows.

  1. I finally got a smart phone but it's a very small screen, 3 x 5 once I learn how to use it I think I'd enjoy the Strava app ...I had to sign up to see your data but it's free. 46.3 miles! Wow what a wonderful trip...You must be in excellent condition. It's a great idea to refill bottles, when the occasional plastic bottle comes into my life it normally goes right into extended service till I'm ready to toss it in the recycling bin. They have stopped recycling glass in our State which to me is absolutely ridiculous...with Trump at the Helm I'm dizzy from all the backwards movement. To me it should be a law that we have to recycle and the States should be in charge of doing it, yet it too is a Capitalists Industry.

  2. Sondra, you wont look back once you've mastered the phone. Mines a Motorola 4G it wasn't expensive but has a good phone camera. They are so handy. Years ago we used to have a deposit on glass bottles which was refunded when you returned them. Strava can record your walks around the parks you visit. You need an internet connection to start the recording but after that no internet is needed until you have finished and want to upload. Plastic is a huge problem here and a report the other day showed how plastic breaks down in the rivers and then enters the food chain. Its frightening. Surely someone can come up with a way of safely disposing it or turning it to something useful.

  3. As ever Dave - great photos! I do wonder what the 'manufacturers' of mineral water are going to be doing once all the shops/supermarkets get tap water points installed as is the plan I believe.

I recently read a book called 'The Story of Stuff' and that is all about how so much tat and crap is available these days, how much of it isn't made to last, and how utterly dreadful the situation is regarding plastics in litter and so on. It is a real eye opener for sure, making for some very grim reading.

I love that viaduct, very impressive and with the path below it reminds me of one we have down here on the Bissoe Tramways Trail.

As for Smart Phones I'm still a bit of a flat earther in that regard, mobile phones just don't feature on my radar, but by crikey they don't half take good photos these days! I know it's supposed to be all about the user, not the camera, but the images coming out of phones these days are pretty darned good - low noise, sharp, good tones etc.
I have got a camera on my phone (it's all of 2mp I think) but I haven't used it yet, don't know how to to be honest!

Anyway, great weather you had there, glad you've finally shaken off the lurgies too!

    Take care and happy cycling

    Mick

    1. Smart phones are good Mick as you have most of the tech things you need all in your pocket. I would miss mine now. As I write this its snowing so I hope you get some down in Cornwall so you can get out in it. All the best.

    1. Mr A yes one of the best weather days this year, but its changed back to snow now. You have to grab the opportunities when they arise.

  5. It looks a beautiful ride on a lovely day. The move towards refilling bottles has to be good. It's worrying how much plastic is in the environment.

  6. Thanks Jenny, as I walk / cycle around the countryside its an eye opener as to how much plastic is just discarded. If only all of it could be made useful.

  7. It's often said that the best camera is the one you have with you at the time.... As mobile phones are with us for most of the time and over the years the picture quality has got better and better the phone camera tends to be my first choice these days even though I have some lovely high end camera.
